The European physical gasoline market demonstrated considerable prompt tightness throughout August 2026, characterised by a steep backwardation. This market condition was primarily driven by a structural deficit in high-octane blending components and unprecedented logistical bottlenecks affecting the Rhine River.

Northwest European (NWE) Eurobob E5 barge assessments peaked at $1,141.00/metric tonne (mt) on 21 August. Concurrently, the cash-to-M1 swap premium reached a substantial $130.50/mt on 14 August, underscoring the immediate supply pressures.

Supply was further constrained as regional refiners prioritised the production of higher-margin middle distillates over light ends. This strategic shift contributed to a 2.1% year-on-year decline in cumulative regional gasoline production, which totalled 47.18 million mt.

A critical factor exacerbating supply issues was the historic low water levels on the Rhine River. The Kaub chokepoint, vital for inland navigation, saw water levels drop to below 10 centimetres on 14 August, specifically reaching 6 cm. This severely limited barge loading capacities to just 25% of normal volumes.

The reduced barge capacity led to a dramatic increase in freight costs from the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) hub to Basel, Switzerland, surging to €276.67/mt on 14 August from €35 in early June. This effectively disrupted the inland transit of gasoline to southern Germany and Switzerland.

In Southern Europe, the market remained tightly balanced. Unconfirmed refinery run reductions, coupled with robust summer tourism demand, contributed to this equilibrium. Free-on-board (FOB) Mediterranean Premium Unleaded cargoes reached $1,186.75/mt on 21 August, with the Mediterranean-to-North paper spread peaking at a $35/mt premium on 20 August.

These market dynamics highlight the intricate interplay of refining economics, seasonal demand patterns, and critical infrastructure vulnerabilities. For market participants, understanding these factors is crucial for navigating supply chain complexities and optimising trading strategies in the European refined products sector.

The pronounced backwardation and elevated premiums across both Northwest and Southern European markets underscore the immediate value placed on prompt supply. This situation presents opportunities for agile players capable of securing and delivering product efficiently within a constrained logistical environment.
