Alkagesta, the Malta-headquartered global commodity trading company, has added European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) allowances to its carbon trading offering. The move was reported by Ship & Bunker, Ship.energy and Bioenergy International in August 2026, and confirmed by the company on 13 August.

The EU ETS has been in operation since 2005 and was extended to cover shipping in January 2024. Its reach now stretches beyond the borders of the European Union, which makes it directly relevant to a trading house active across energy, fuels, fertilizers and related commodity markets in dozens of jurisdictions.

Alkagesta will also cover ETS2, the expanded scheme due to take effect in 2028, according to reporting by Ship.energy. ETS2 widens the scope of the system to a broader set of fuel users, drawing smaller businesses into compliance obligations that until now have largely sat with heavier industrial and maritime emitters.

Anthony Guida, Biofuels Trading Desk Lead at Alkagesta, said trading EU ETS allowances alongside the company's CORSIA-eligible SAF and biofuels business allows it to support clients across a much wider set of carbon obligations from a single desk. As ETS2 brings smaller businesses into scope and ReFuelEU blending requirements ramp up, he said, having one trading partner across allowances, credits and physical fuel supply is becoming increasingly valuable.

The combination is a practical one for buyers. Compliance exposure for shipowners, fuel suppliers and aviation customers is increasingly split between physical low-carbon molecules and paper instruments, and sourcing both through separate counterparties adds cost and administrative friction.

For Alkagesta, the addition builds on an existing environmental products footprint that includes ISCC CORSIA-certified sustainable aviation fuel and biofuels trading. It positions the company alongside a small group of mid-sized independents seeking to serve compliance demand created by successive tightenings of European fuel and emissions regulation.
